UK-Searches for hotels in short and long haul destinations way below domestic levels

The great Easter getaway is pretty much here. News reports indicate over 370,000 passengers are expected to leave Heathrow Airport between Good Friday and Easter Monday, and 200,000 will pass through Gatwick. However, on the accommodation front, Greenlight's latest report covering search in the hotels sector throws up some interesting findings with regards to zones that pulled in the most number of hotel-related queries. Its more home than away!

Greenlight Research-UK: More than twice as many searches made for Hotels at home than abroad

Airports are braced for the Easter holiday rush as folk head home or take a flight of fancy elsewhere. More than 370,000 passengers are expected to leave Heathrow Airport between Good Friday and Easter Monday, and 200,000 will pass through Gatwick – all of which surely bodes well for the hotel trade. In fact, Greenlight's latest independent research covering the hotel sector, found that in January, the number of hotel-related searches made online by UK searchers totalled 2 million. Interestingly however, the majority of their hotel queries pertained to the UK.

Greenlight Research - UK: Holiday searches up 42% with North America making the greatest gains

Searches for holidays online in January were up a massive 42% on November 2011 levels, according to the latest quarterly research from Greenlight covering consumer search behaviour in the holiday sector. This may in part, perhaps, have been driven by savvy consumers looking to book holidays early and additionally pre-empting last week’s budget announcement in which Chancellor George Osborne confirmed the double inflationary increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD) to all destinations commencing 1 April 2012.

Google Flights Search has taken off and will fly high

A few days ago Google officially launched its flights search feature in the organic results. If you search for "flights from London to Manchester" or "flights to New York", you will now see a selection of flights, flight times and what airlines provide services to your destination above the natural search results. With the new feature, Google will certainly distract searchers from clicking on some of the high-ranking results from big aggregators like cheapflights.co.uk, skyscanner.net, travelsupermarket.com and many other online travel agents and airlines.
